Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad. These feelings are usually short lived and pass within a couple of days.

When you have Clinical Depression it interferes with daily life.

Clinical Depression is a common condition.

There are various forms of Depression. Major Depressive Disorder is characterised by a combination of symptoms that interfere with a persons ability to work, sleep, study, eat and enjoy activities.

Dysthymic disorder is characterised by long term (two years or longer) symptoms that are not severe enough to disable a person but prevent normal functioning.

There are other forms of depression such as Postpartum Depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder, and Bipolar Disorder.

People with Depressive Disorder can experience a range of symptoms, in varying degrees of severity and frequency. These symptoms include:

  • persistent sad anxious or empty feelings
  • feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and pessimism
  • feelings of guilt and worthlessness
  • irritability, restlessness
  • loss of interest in activities once pleasurable including sex
  • fatigue and decreased injury
  • difficulty concentrating, and making decisions
  • insomnia, early morning awakening, or excessive sleeping
  • appetite loss or overeating -thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
  • somatic aches, pains There may be co-occurring problems such as alcohol and substance use.

There are several psychotherapy approaches that have shown to be effective in treating Depression. This includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy(CBT).

CBT helps understand the behaviours, emotions and thoughts that contribute to Depression. The intervention also involves helping to restructure negative thought patterns, reducing stress in your life with a range of self management and coping skills, and regaining a sense of control and pleasure in life.

There are a range of medications that can also be helpful.

Psychotherapy is often the best option for mild to moderate depressions.

For severe depression medication is also recommended.
